Stena Bulk LLC Implements Neverfail to Ensure Continuous Availability of Vital Ship Management System and Email

Stena Bulk, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, is one of the largest petroleum shipping companies in the world and operates 71 tankers through several worldwide offices including Houston, London, Singapore, Beijing and Moscow.
Following the disastrous 2005 hurricane season that affected businesses along the Gulf Coast, Stena Bulk examined its own disaster recovery capabilities. While its Houston facilities remained unaffected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Stena Rederi AB—the division that oversees technology for the Stena companies, including Stena Bulk—concluded that its global shipping operations would be adversely affected if inclement weather or planned maintenance were to cause a period of application downtime. Working with a Neverfail partner and value-added reseller, Stena Rederi decided to fortify its tape backup and off-site storage solution with Neverfail for Microsoft Exchange to protect and maintain email communications and Neverfail for Microsoft SQL Server to protect SHIPNET, the company’s ship management system.

During a two-day system maintenance and power shut-down operation in the company’s Houston office, Stena Bulk rolled its servers over to its Gothenburg facilities, keeping their systems up and running until power was restored, ensuring no disruption in productivity. With Neverfail, the entire failover process is completely transparent to the end-user and does not require them to restart email or databases. Employees continue to work as usual regardless of natural disruptions or maintenance operations.
